WebP to GIF Converter

Convert a static or animated WebP into a GIF in this browser. The decoder composites every animation frame before encoding, so a multi-frame WebP does not become a still. GIF stores a palette, one transparent color and delays in hundredths of a second, so colors, partial transparency and timing can change. Compare frames, duration and file size, then download. This is not a lossless conversion.

What does WebP to GIF Converter do?

WebP to GIF reads a local .webp file, including an animated WebP, and builds a GIF from the composited frames. A still WebP stays one frame. An animated file keeps frame order. You can set width, height, a percentage scale, source delays or a constant frame rate, palette size, dithering, loop behavior, and whether partial transparency is flattened onto a color. GIF cannot store the same colors or partial alpha as WebP, and delays are stored in hundredths of a second. Compare the measured frame count, duration and file size before you download.

How to use WebP to GIF Converter

  1. 1Upload a .webp file. The page reports whether it is static or animated.
  2. 2Set dimensions, scale, timing, palette, loop and transparency.
  3. 3Convert to GIF and compare the decoded preview with the exported animation.
  4. 4Download the GIF. Cancel stops the local encode.

Supported inputs and outputs

Inputs

Static WebP, Animated WebP

Outputs

GIF from the composited WebP frames

Practical uses

  • Turning an animated WebP into a GIF for a destination that does not accept WebP
  • Checking frame count and duration before downloading
  • Resizing while converting, then compressing if the GIF is larger

Browser and media limitations

  • The conversion is not lossless. GIF uses a palette of at most 256 colors.
  • Partial WebP alpha becomes one transparent color, or a flat background if you choose that.
  • Frame delays round to hundredths of a second. A constant FPS rebuilds the timeline.
  • A WebP loop count of 0 means forever. Players do not all agree on other counts.
  • Limits are 30 MB, 300 frames, 2048 pixels on a side, and 24 million total pixels.

How local processing works

Your media is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Tubelexity for processing. This page does not load a video engine. Page navigation and analytics still use network requests.

What a sample animated WebP becomes

This example uses a generated sample, not a user file. A sample animated WebP made from a 96 by 64 test animation has 3 frames, delays of 100, 200 and 300 milliseconds, and a stored loop count of 3. The converter keeps that frame count and those delays. GIF then stores the delays as 10, 20 and 30 centiseconds.

WebP can update part of the canvas and blend with partial alpha. The decoder composites each display frame before any resize or palette step. GIF then keeps only one transparent index. That is why a converted file can be larger, and why it should not be described as lossless.

Frequently asked questions

Can animated WebP be converted to GIF?

Yes. The file is demuxed and every animation frame is composited before encoding. A still WebP stays one frame. Passing the whole file to an image element is not used, because that can expose only the first frame.

Does GIF support the same transparency as WebP?

No. GIF has one transparent color. Partial alpha is turned on or off, or flattened onto the background color you choose.

Will animation timing change?

Source delays are kept and then rounded to hundredths of a second. Choose constant FPS only when you want a new timeline. The page reports how many delays change.

Why may the converted GIF be larger?

GIF palette compression is often less efficient than WebP. Compare the measured sizes. GIF Compressor can reduce dimensions, frame rate or colors afterward.
