APNG to GIF Converter

Convert an animated PNG into a GIF by compositing each display frame, including offsets, blend and disposal, then encoding a palette. Partial alpha is flattened onto a color or cut with a threshold, because GIF has only one transparent index. Delays round to hundredths of a second. A PNG without an animation chunk becomes one frame. The GIF is not a lossless copy of the APNG.

What does APNG to GIF Converter do?

APNG to GIF decodes animation control, frame control, and frame data. Offsets, blend, disposal, delays, and loop metadata are applied so each display frame is complete before GIF encoding. A normal PNG with no animation chunk converts as one frame. GIF has a palette and one transparent index, so partial alpha is flattened onto a color or cut with a threshold. Delays round to hundredths of a second. A zero delay becomes one centisecond because many players treat zero as 100 milliseconds.

How to use APNG to GIF Converter

  1. 1Upload an APNG or a PNG. The page says whether an animation chunk was found.
  2. 2Set width, height, or a percentage, and lock the aspect if you need it.
  3. 3Choose a loop, a background flatten, or an alpha threshold, plus palette size.
  4. 4Convert to GIF, compare frames and file size, and download. Cancel stops the encode.

Supported inputs and outputs

Inputs

Animated PNG, Static PNG

Outputs

GIF from the composited APNG frames

Practical uses

  • Posting an APNG somewhere that only accepts GIF
  • Choosing a background before partial transparency is discarded
  • Checking a still PNG so it is not treated as an animation

Browser and media limitations

  • Partial alpha does not survive. Flatten blends it, or the threshold turns it fully on or off.
  • The palette holds at most 256 colors. Dithering changes the pattern, not the lost detail.
  • Delays round to centiseconds. The page counts how many delays change.
  • Players do not all agree on nonzero loop counts. Forever and play-once are explicit.
  • Limits are 30 MB, 300 frames, 2048 pixels on a side, and 24 million total pixels.

How local processing works

Your media is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Tubelexity for processing. This page does not load a video engine. Page navigation and analytics still use network requests.

What a sample APNG becomes as GIF

This example uses a generated sample, not a user file. The same 96 by 64 animation has 3 frames and delays of 100, 200 and 300 milliseconds. GIF stores those delays as 10, 20 and 30 centiseconds. Offsets, blend, and disposal are composited before the palette step, so the GIF frames are complete pictures rather than raw sub-rectangles.

Partial alpha is flattened onto the background you choose, or cut by the alpha threshold. A PNG with no animation chunk is one frame and is labeled as a static PNG. The palette cannot keep every APNG color, so the GIF is not a lossless copy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert APNG to GIF?

Upload the file. Each display frame is composited, then encoded as a palette GIF. A PNG without an animation chunk stays one frame.

Does GIF preserve partial transparency?

No. Choose flatten to paint pixels on a background, or an alpha threshold to keep only pixels at or above that alpha.

Can frame timing change?

The sequence stays. GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, so a delay that is not already a multiple of 10 milliseconds is rounded.

Why might GIF files become larger?

A palette frame can compress worse than PNG, especially after flattening or dithering. Compare the measured sizes. GIF Compressor can reduce the result.
