GIF to APNG Converter

Convert a GIF into a real animated PNG in this browser. Every composited frame, its order, its delay, and its on-or-off transparency are written into an APNG with animation chunks. The conversion does not restore colors the GIF palette already discarded, and the APNG is not always smaller. A still GIF stays one frame. No video engine is loaded.

What does GIF to APNG Converter do?

GIF to APNG reads every composited GIF frame and writes an animated PNG. The file starts with a PNG signature and includes animation control, frame control, and frame data chunks. Order, on-or-off transparency, and delays are kept as closely as the formats allow. A forever GIF loop stays a forever APNG loop, and a play-once GIF plays once. You can resize by pixels or by a percentage with the aspect locked. The conversion cannot recover colors the GIF palette already discarded, and the APNG is not always smaller.

How to use GIF to APNG Converter

  1. 1Upload a GIF and review its frame count, duration, and dimensions.
  2. 2Keep the size, enter a percentage, or set width and height. Lock the aspect when you want it.
  3. 3Choose the loop, then convert to APNG.
  4. 4Play the APNG preview, compare the file size, and download. Cancel stops the local encode.

Supported inputs and outputs

Inputs

Animated GIF, Static GIF

Outputs

Animated PNG with acTL, fcTL, and fdAT chunks

Practical uses

  • Saving a GIF as an animated PNG for a page that accepts APNG
  • Keeping GIF transparency while leaving the palette limitation visible
  • Resizing during the conversion

Browser and media limitations

  • APNG does not restore color detail that the GIF palette already lost.
  • The new file can be larger than the GIF. Compare the measured sizes.
  • Full-canvas frames are written with source blend and no disposal, after the GIF has been composited.
  • Limits are 30 MB, 300 frames, 2048 pixels on a side, and 24 million total pixels.
  • This page does not load a video engine.

How local processing works

Your media is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Tubelexity for processing. This page does not load a video engine. Page navigation and analytics still use network requests.

What a sample GIF becomes as APNG

This example uses a generated sample, not a user file. The sample GIF is 96 by 64 pixels, with 3 frames and delays of 100, 200 and 300 milliseconds. The APNG keeps that frame count. Each delay is stored as delay_num over delay_den: 100/1000, 200/1000 and 300/1000 of a second. The frames are full-canvas, use source blend, and do not dispose the canvas.

On-or-off transparency in the composited GIF is kept. Colors the GIF palette already discarded are not restored. The APNG can be larger than the GIF. Compare the two file sizes on the page rather than assuming a saving.

Frequently asked questions

What is APNG?

APNG is an animated PNG. It stores frames in PNG chunks, including animation control and per-frame control, and it can keep 8-bit color and alpha.

Can GIF animations be converted into animated PNGs?

Yes. Every composited frame is written in order. A static GIF stays one frame. The download is a real APNG, not a renamed still PNG.

Does APNG support transparency?

Yes. Transparency that is already on or off in the composited GIF is kept. Partial alpha that the GIF never stored cannot be invented.

Will converting GIF to APNG improve quality?

No. The GIF palette has already reduced the color. APNG can store the composited pixels more directly, but it does not restore the lost detail.
